Vodafone Broadband Review 2024 - Is Vodafone Broadband Worth It?

Review article by , last updated

Vodafone Wi-Fi 6E Ultra Hub

What We Like (Pros): No upfront fees, generally cheaper broadband prices, extra money off with the Vodafone Together discount, excellent features in the Pro II broadband packages, utilises the growing Openreach & CityFibre networks to provide full fibre gigabit speed availability to 12 million UK homes, UK's first Wi-Fi 6E Ultra Hub router & Booster, full fibre speeds up to 2.2Gbps to launch in 2024

What We Dislike (Cons): Long call waiting times - I had to wait just under 4 minutes to speak to someone when I tested phoning them, no one-month rolling broadband contracts, limited TV offering

1. Introduction

Vodafone is the UK's third largest mobile network operator with around 17 million UK mobile customers. Following its acquisition of the Cable & Wireless Group back in 2012, Vodafone launched its first fixed-line domestic broadband offering to the UK public in October 2015. Fast forward to today and Vodafone has just over 1 million UK broadband customers, with 500,000 of these taking Vodafone Broadband and Mobile services together. The company is really accelerating its push into the UK broadband market with its gigafast full fibre broadband services now available to 12 million UK homes - thanks primarily to its partnership deals with infrastructure providers, Openreach and CityFibre. With very competitive broadband prices too, we take a closer look at Vodafone Broadband to see how it really stacks up on factors like actual broadband speed performance and customer service levels. We'll tell you what we like & dislike and compare Vodafone against Plusnet and TalkTalk. You can then decide whether a switch to Vodafone Broadband is the right move for you. You can even start your order from this page if you like.

2. Vodafone Broadband - At a glance

  • Average speeds: Fibre 1 Broadband 38Mbps, Fibre 2 Broadband 67Mbps, Full Fibre 100 Broadband 100Mbps (limited geographic availability), Full Fibre 200 Broadband 200Mbps (limited geographic availability), Full Fibre 500 Broadband 500Mbps (limited geographic availability), Full Fibre 900 Broadband 910Mbps (limited geographic availability)
  • Vodafone Full Fibre review: Vodafone has partnered with full fibre infrastructure providers Openreach (part of the BT Group) and CityFibre to make Vodafone Full Fibre Broadband (Vodafone Gigafast) available to more than 12 million UK homes (this is around 38% UK coverage based on 31.3 million UK homes). Speeds from 38Mbps all the way up to 900Mbps are available, with landmark 2.2Gbps speeds available in 2024. Interestingly, I have noticed that pricing and upload speeds can vary depending upon whether your home is in an Openreach or CityFibre network area
  • Vodafone Broadband plan types & features: There are 2 plan types; Fibre and Pro II Fibre. Xtra, Vodafone's TV offering can be added to any of the Pro II plan types. Vodafone Fibre Broadband includes unlimited usage, an intelligent Wi-Fi hub, landline, no upfont fees and a Vodafone Together discount. Vodafone Pro II Fibre Broadand includes all of Fibre, plus the UK's first Wi-Fi 6E Ultra Hub and Booster for the UK's fastest Wi-Fi technology throughout the home (these are both white/greyish in colour, which I really like), automatic 4G broadband backup, dedicated Wi-Fi experts on call 24/7 and 12 months FREE Norton 360 Premium security
  • Vodafone Fibre Broadband prices: Fibre 1 38Mbps speeds Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) £24p/m or Fibre To The Premise (FTTP) £24p/m, Fibre 2 67Mbps speeds (FTTC or FTTP) - £25p/m, Full Fibre 100Mbps speeds - £28p/m, Full Fibre 200Mbps speeds - £32p/m, Full Fibre 500Mbps speeds - £32p/m, Full Fibre 900Mbps speeds - £38p/m
  • Vodafone Pro II Fibre Broadband prices: Pro II Fibre 1 38Mbps speeds (FTTC or FTTP) - £34p/m, Pro II Fibre 2 67Mbps speeds (FTTC or FTTP) - £35p/m, Pro II Full Fibre 100Mbps speeds - £38p/m, Pro II Full Fibre 200Mbps speeds - £42p/m, Pro II Full Fibre 500Mbps speeds - £42p/m, Pro II Full Fibre 900Mbps speeds - £48p/m
  • Vodafone Together discount: Transfer your family's home broadband and mobile plans to Vodafone and save up to £3 a month on your broadband, plus up to 30% off each SIM that you add - I think this is an excellent way to save some money on your broadband and mobile bill
  • Cheaper Vodafone Broadband for people on benefits: Please see Vodafone Essentials Broadband
  • FREE gift for existing Vodafone mobile customers signing up to Vodafone Pro II Broadband: Please see Vodafone Ring Doorbell offer
  • Vodafone Broadband customer complaints Q3 2023: 15 broadband complaints per 100,000 customers, the same as the industry average - and better than the likes of TalkTalk, NOW and Virgin Media (Source: Latest Ofcom Telecoms & Pay TV Complaints Report, published 25th January 2024)
  • Vodafone Broadband customer satisfaction 2022: 83% satisfaction with the overall Vodafone Broadband service, which is slightly better than the 2022 industry average of 82%. (Source: Ofcom Comparing Customer Service Report 2022, published 18th May 2023)

3. Vodafone Broadband Speed Performance

Vodafone's average broadband speed claims of 38Mbps for Fibre 1 and 67Mbps for Fibre 2 are backed up by its own research which claims that 73% of customers on Fibre 1 receive download speeds above 35Mbps and 61% of customers on Fibre 2 receive download speeds above 63Mbps. As Vodafone utilises the Openreach network for fibre broadband, its average speed claims for Fibre 1 and Fibre 2 are very similar to those of other broadband suppliers like Sky, BT, EE and Plusnet, who also use the Openreach network. For all other Vodafone Broadband products (Full Fibre 100, 200, 500 & 900) Vodafone estimates that a majority of customers will receive the relevant download speeds specified.

So, how does Vodafone's average broadband speed claims compare against their actual real world broadband speeds? Ofcom's UK Home Broadband Performance report (covering March 2023 and published in September 2023) lists the actual broadband speeds received by a sample of consumers who have had speed monitoring equipment installed in their homes. The report shows us that Vodafone's Fibre 2 (67Mpbs) package had an actual real world 24-hour average speed of 59.96Mbps with a 11.64 milliesecond (ms) latency/ping rate - so less than its average broadband speed claims. No Ofcom speed research data was available for any other Vodafone Broadband package, including Vodafone FTTP plans.

It's worth knowing that Vodafone provided me with an estimate of the broadband speed I was likely to receive prior to me completing my online order for Vodafone Broadband. I found this to be really useful, so expect the same if you order. These speeds can vary though and be impacted by things like the distance of your home from the network exchange, the number of people using the Internet, the level of use of the Internet, plus other technical and environmental factors.

5. Compare Vodafone Pro II Fibre Broadband Prices

Vodafone Pro II Fibre Broadband, as the name suggests, is a more premium broadband offering. I really like the Pro II packages as they include all the regular fibre features outlined in the packages above, plus extras like the UK's first Wi-Fi 6E Ultra Hub and Booster - which, when you open the box, look great in white/grey rather than the usual black. There's also automatic 4G broadband backup, dedicated Wi-Fi experts on call around the clock, plus 12 months FREE Norton 360 Premium security. Prices start from £34 a month with no upfront fees.

7. Vodafone Home Phone Review

Vodafone Broadband products include home phone line rental and free services like Voicemail and Caller Display.

You can choose to pay as you go for the calls you make, or choose a Vodafone home phone calling Extra, like evening & weekend landline calls for £4 a month, or anytime landline and mobile calls for £8 a month. Making phone calls to overseas? 300 minutes a month to international destinations (around 46 countries) can also be added for £5 a month. You'll need to keep one of these Extras for at least 30 days, so I think they're pretty flexible and you're also not tied into a long contract for them. Other call management features that can be added for a fee include anonymous caller reject, call divert and call waiting.

Please note some of Vodafone's home phone features are not available with Vodafone full fibre broadband plans.

8. Vodafone TV Xtra Review

Customers taking any Vodafone Pro II Fibre Broadband product can also add Vodafone's TV Xtra plan to their subscription. Vodafone Xtra includes the Apple TV 4K device with 3 months FREE Apple TV+ subscription (new Apple TV+ subscribers only). Watch live TV, high definition movies and Apple originals, together with your favourite shows from the likes of the BBC iPlayer & All4, plus your subscriptions from Netflix, NOW and Amazon Prime Video - all on your TV through the Apple TV app. I also like how I was able to experience my music, photos and videos on my TV and use Siri to control it just using my voice.

I found Vodafone TV Xtra to not be as comprehensive as the traditional Sky or Virgin Media TV services, however, it does suit the growing use of 'Lite' TV services that provide an easy central access point to a range of apps & content that people are already subscribed to (e.g. NOW, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+). If you're a Vodafone mobile customer with an Entertainment Plan you can also access your included apps like Spotify and YouTube Premium.

Vodafone Broadband and TV deals also include anytime landline and mobile phone calls.

10. Vodafone Broadband Package & Router Details

Vodafone has at least 8 broadband products to choose from across 2 package types; Fibre & Pro II Fibre. Standard FTTC fibre prices start from £25 a month for average download speeds of 67Mb. Phone line rental is included in that price together with other standard features like Intelligent Wi-Fi. We've looked at Vodafone's standard Fibre 2 package below which has 67Mbps average download speeds:

In Detail: The Vodafone Fibre 2 Package

  • Download speeds averaging 67Mbps
  • Upload speeds averaging 17.8Mbps
  • Unlimited downloads
  • The Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub is twice as fast as previous models and I found that it syncs well with the Vodafone Broadband app so I could take control of my broadband. The Hub itself has 7 antennas with beamforming technology (where wireless signals are directed towards receiving devices), 4 gigabit network ports for wired connections and 2 USB ports. Delivering reliable Wi-Fi coverage and supporting the 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi standard, I found the Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub to be straight-forward to setup. It's also free for all new Vodafone Broadband customers
  • Online security, known as Secure Net, is also provided by the Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub. This is a set of Anti-Malware and Anti-Phishing protection filters, plus Parental Controls, that can be adjusted accordingly. Customers taking a Vodafone Pro II Broadband plan receive 12 months free Norton 360 Premium anti-virus software
  • Vodafone customer service available from 8am to 8pm
  • Access to Vodafone Broadband technical support available either online or free to call
  • 24 month contract
  • No upfront setup charges
  • £25 per month. Phone line rental included. Also available as Full Fibre

11. Switching, Installation & Setup

Switching your broadband to Vodafone is pretty straight forward. Once you've ordered your chosen Vodafone Broadband package online, you'll receive a text message and an order confirmation email which will contain details of the proposed start date for your broadband service.

Your broadband start date will be influenced by whether you have an existing phone line that Vodafone can use or whether a new phone line needs to be installed by an Openreach or CityFibre engineer. This will be established during your online sign-up process and you will be notified accordingly.

If you have an existing Openreach phone line that can be used (perhaps you're a BT, Sky, EE, TalkTalk or Plusnet customer), then your broadband start date is likely to be around 17 days after you place your order. Note, this is longer than the industry average of 14 days according to Ofcom's Comparing Customer Service report for Mobile, Home Broadband and Landline (last published in May 2023).

If you need a new line to be installed by Openreach or CityFibre, you will be notified of the installation date (you can also change it). Installation can take up to 4 hours depending upon whether it's a fibre or full fibre installation. The latter may also involve digging a route through your driveway or garden, either way, the engineer should talk to you before any work is started. I always make sure I'm around in these type of instances and advise that you do the same. A one-off installation charge of up to £60 may also apply. You should be made aware of this when you place your broadand order.

On your broadband start date or installation date, it can take up to midnight for your broadband service to go live. Simply plug the supplied Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub into your master phone socket and follow the instructions. If you've had an engineer installation, they will test your service to make sure you're connected.

In most instances Vodafone will contact your existing broadband provider after you place your Vodafone Broadband order. They will handle the whole switching process for you to make sure you have no downtime and cancel your contract. Note, I always check myself that my previous broadband contract has been cancelled, together with my direct debit.

Please note that upon switching, your new broadband speeds may vary over the next 10 days or so. This has happended to me a few times as the new service optimises to find the most stable and reliable connection.

12. Vodafone Broadband Customer Service Performance, Satisfaction, Support, Complaints & Phone Numbers

If you're having problems with your broadband or have an account query, the Vodafone customer service team can be contacted by dialling 191 from your Vodafone mobile or by calling 0333 3040 191. Lines are open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. According to Ofcom's May 2023 Comparing Service Quality report, the average call waiting time for Vodafone was 3 minute 19 seconds, slower than the industry average of 2 minutes, 37 seconds. When I tested phoning them, I was waiting even longer at just under 4 minutes to speak to someone, which I wasn't impressed about.

Broadband issues, support and account queries can also be discussed over Vodafone's Live Chat service which is available on its website 7 days a week (I've yet to try this). Vodafone's social media channels can also be used.

Comprehensive broadband support and advice in the form of a series of helpful guides are available on Vodafone's website and on its Broadband app, while Vodafone's online community is also a useful destination to explore.

Despite Vodafone's extensive customer service and support there's historically been issues with key performance metrics like broadband customer complaint levels. Ofcom's latest Telecoms & Pay TV Complaints Report, published in January 2024, shows an improvement though, with Vodafone generating 15 complaints per 100,000 broadband customers for the period Q3 2023. This is the same as the industry average and is better than rivals Virgin Media, TalkTalk and NOW (Source: Latest Ofcom Telecoms & Pay TV Complaints Report, published 25th January 2024)

In Ofcom's Comparing Customer Service Report 2022 (published in May 2023), the overall customer satisfaction with the Vodafone Broadband service was found to 83%, which is better than the industry average of 82%. This was also significantly better than last year's 77% customer satisfaction score.

There's a lot to like about Vodafone Broadband; no upfront fees, a range of broadband types with excellent features in the Pro II plans, low broadband prices and a commitment to the rollout of Vodafone full fibre broadband with gigafast speeds now available to over 12 milion UK homes.

However, Vodafone's historical higher than average broadband customer complaint levels (as reported by Ofcom) are a concern. If they can resolve this and consistently score better in this key area, Vodafone will become a major broadband rival to the likes of BT, Sky and Virgin Media.
