In this review: 1. Key highlights 2. Broadband speeds 3. Broadband deals 4. Post Office Fibre Vs TalkTalk Fibre & Plusnet Fibre 5. Post Office home phone review 6. Package & router details 7. Installation & setup 8. Customer service 9. Our final verdict

1. Key Highlights

  • Straight-forward ordering & switching: Place your Post Office Broadband order online in 5 minutes, plus if you're with BT, TalkTalk, EE or Plusnet, the Post Office will handle the switchover for you and cancel the contract with your current provider

2. Post Office Broadband Speeds

The Post Office broadband speeds of 11Mbps for ADSL, 38Mbps for Fibre and 67Mbps for Fibre Plus are average download speeds that are available to at least 50% of Post Office Broadband customers at peak times (8pm-10pm, 7 days a week). These speeds are on a par with the average speeds of other major broadband providers, excluding the cable supplier Virgin Media. Unlike some providers, the Post Office will not slow your broadband speed down at peak times.

It's worth noting that the actual download speeds you will receive from the Post Office may be influenced by a variety of factors both inside and outside your home, like home wiring, electrical interference, the quality of the line and your home's distance from the exchange. The Post Office will give you a more accurate estimation of the download speed you will receive before you sign up online with them.

3. Compare Post Office Broadband Deals

5. Post Office Home Phone Review

Post Office home phone line rental is included in the pricing of all Post Office broadband packages. Calls made using your home phone to other Post Office Home Phone customers are included at no extra cost. Calls to other numbers are charged on a pay as you use basis in accordance with Post Office call rates, which are some of the lowest call rates around. If you don't make any calls from a landline phone, you can choose to block any outgoing calls (Call Barring) and take full control of your monthly spend. You will still be able to make emergency calls to 999.

If you make frequent calls from your landline phone, it is likely to be more cost effective to add a Post Office calling plan to your broadband package. There's various options available, with weekend calls to UK landlines costing £2 a month, evening & weekend calls to UK landlines at £5 a month and anytime calls to UK landlines at £7 per month. Plans covering calls to UK Mobiles and International numbers are also available from £3 a month.

7. Installation & Setup

If you're switching to Post Office Broadband from another provider that uses the Openreach network (for example, BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet, EE and many more), the Post Office will handle the entire changeover process for you and contact your existing provider.

After you've ordered Post Office phone and broadband you'll receive in the post a Welcome Pack, a wireless router, your account information and your switchover date. On this date, plug in the Post Office wireless router, follow their quick start guide and you should be good to go. No engineer visit is necessary unless you need a new phone line installed or re-connected for which charges apply (£30 for their ADSL package and £60 for their Fibre packages).

Please bear in mind that your broadband speed will fluctuate during the first 10 days of service as it optimises to find the most stable broadband speeds for your phone line.

8. Post Office Broadband Customer Service, Support & Phone Numbers

The Post Office Broadband and Home Phone Support teams can be contacted free from a landline on 0800 092 0514. They can also be contacted from a mobile by calling 0345 600 3210. The support teams are available from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 6pm on Sunday. Depending upon the severity of the broadband problem, customers may also be able to log in to their online account and raise a problem ticket.

According to Ofcom's latest Comparing Service Quality Report (last published August 2020), customers contacting Post Office Broadband Support had an average call waiting time of 1 minute 12 seconds, compared to an industry average of 2 minutes 10 seconds.

In Ofcom's latest league table covering the complaints they receive about home broadband providers (published in February 2021, covering Q3 2020), the Post Office recorded 13 complaints per 100,000 customers. This performance is better than the industry average of 15 complaints per 100,000 customers and out-performs rivals like TalkTalk and Vodafone.

The Post Office has also signed up to Ofcom's new Fairness For Customer Commitments programme which helps ensure customers are always treated fairly by their provider - whether they are signing up to a new deal, trying to fix a problem or switching to a new company. All of the UK's biggest broadband providers have now signed up to the commitments which is the latest step in Ofcom's Fairness For Customers Programme. This includes money back for customers when things go wrong and covers delays with the start of a new service, missed appointments by engineers and delayed repairs following loss of service.

9. Our Final Verdict On Broadband From The Post Office

Post Office Broadband Review - Final Comments And Rating
Final Rating - 4 out of 5 4 Star Rating
The Post Office broadband and home phone packages are worthy of serious consideration. Though relatively basic in nature and without a digital TV bundle option, the packages represent good value for money and are backed up by reasonable customer service. There's a range of contract periods available and flexible payment options, including paying at your local Post Office. All in all these are good packages with decent speeds. Prices are also fixed for the duration of the contract period, so there's no mid-contract price hikes to worry about.

New customers can now get Post Office Fibre Broadband with phone line rental from just £24 a month. 6 months FREE F-Secure SAFE Internet security for all devices is included. Please click here for further information at the postoffice.co.uk
