Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5 4.5 Star Rating

Sky, owned by Comcast, is not only the UK's leading pay TV provider with over 10 million subscribers enjoying its leading coverage of sports, movies and top entertainment on hundreds of channels like Sky Atlantic and Sky One. It is also the UK's second largest broadband & phone supplier with over 6 million customers, many of which are taking Sky TV & Broadband together to generate maximum savings. With its strong performance and reputation in the telecommunications market, we take a closer look at its broadband packages to see how they stack up. You can then decide whether a Sky Broadband deal (with or without Sky TV) is right for you and if you're ready, you can start your order from this page.

  • Customer broadband complaints Q1 2020: 6 complaints per 100,000 customers, the second fewest broadband complaints in the industry versus an average of 12 per 100,000 (Source: Latest Ofcom Telecoms & Pay TV Complaints Report, published September 4th 2020)
  • Customer satisfaction 2019: 86% satisfaction with overrall Sky Broadband services, which is slightly better than the industry average of 85% (Source: Ofcom Comparing Service Quality 2019, published 21st August 2020)
  • Straight-forward ordering & switching: Place your Sky Broadband order online and the Sky Switch Squad will handle the switch-over for you (including liasing with your current supplier) and keep you regularly updated. Customers switching from Virgin Media to Sky will need to cancel their service with Virgin Media themselves and choose a cancellation date as close as they can to the date of their Sky service activation

2. Sky Broadband Speeds

The advertised Sky broadband speed of 59Mbps for Broadand Superfast is the speed at least half of Sky customers on this broadband package receive to their Sky hub when lines are at their busiest (8pm-10pm, every day). The Sky Broadband Superfast average speeds of 59Mbps are slightly lower than the average superfast fibre speeds of other major broadband suppliers (typically 63-67Mbps).

The Ofcom annual UK Home Broadband Performance Report 2019 (measurement period November 2019, published in May 2020) shows that the average Sky Broadband speeds advertised are pretty similar to their real world speeds. The Sky Superfast 59Mbps Fibre package was found to have an average peak-time download speed of between 47Mbps and 57.2Mbps. As expected, there is no data currently available in Ofcom's report for Sky's ultrafast package which is only available in certain geographic areas.

During the Sky Broadband online ordering process, Sky will provide you with an indication of the download speed you are likely to receive to your Sky hub when using the internet. It's worth noting that the speeds you subsequently experience can be affected by the number of devices and home technology like app-controlled thermostats connected to your Wi-Fi and thus using up bandwidth. Therefore, it's worth selecting a Sky Broadband package that has sufficient speeds to handle all these devices.

9. Installation & Setup

Ofcom's Comparing Service Quality Report (last published in August 2020), shows that the average number of days it takes Sky to deliver a broadband service (from order to delivery) is 13, compared to the industry average of 11 days.

You'll receive a confirmation email from Sky once you've placed your broadband order. This provides a breakdown of your order and the expected activation date. Should you not have a suitable phone line, Sky will arrange for an Openreach engineer to install a new line before your service activation date. This may cause a slight delay depending on when an Openreach engineer is available. Either way, Sky will keep you informed of all the important dates, while you can also track the whole process online.

Your new Sky Broadband Hub wireless router should arrive on or just before your Sky activation date.

When the switch is complete and your Sky Broadband service is live, you'll receive a text message and/or email from Sky. Simply plug the Sky Broadband Hub into your phone socket (ideally your master phone socket for the best possible speed) and follow the setup instructions provided by Sky to get up and running.

Over the next ten days or so, bear in mind that your broadband speeds may fluctuate as your phone line adjusts for the optimum connection.

10. Sky Broadband Customer Service, Satisfaction, Support, Complaints & Phone Numbers

Sky Customer Service, Sky TV Support, Sky Broadband Support and Sky Talk Support is available via the Sky Helpline that is open Monday to Sunday, 8.30am to 11.30pm. The freephone number to contact is 0333 7591 018. Live chat is also available during these times. According to the Ofcom Comparing Service Quality Report (last published August 2020), the Sky Helpline call answering time is on average 2 minutes 28 seconds, which is slightly slower than the industry average call answer time of 2 minute 10 seconds.

The Sky website also has an impressive range of self-help guides, with Sky quoting that over 90% of the customers who use their online guides get the help they need before even having to get in touch via phone or chat.

As mentioned earlier in our review, Sky Broadband performs vey well with regards to customer complaints. According to the latest Ofcom Telecoms & Pay TV Complaints Report, published in September 2020, Sky had the second fewest broadband complaints in the industry in Q1 2020 at just 5 complaints per 100,000 customers, compared to an average of 12 per 100,000.

Overrall customer satisfaction with Sky Broadband services was 86% in 2019 according to Ofcom's 2019 Comparing Service Quality report. This is slightly better than the industry average of 85%.

11. Our Final Verdict On Sky Broadband

Sky Broadband Review - Our Final Comment And Rating
Final Rating - 4.5 out of 5
If you're looking for a broadband provider that scores extremely well on metrics like customer service, satisfaction and complaints, then Sky is a top contender.

Sky's broadband packages are fairly priced for the speeds and services offered, though bear in mind that maximum savings and value can only be achieved by taking Sky Broadband and TV together. In particular, we think the new £39 per month Sky TV deal (with Sky Q box, Sky Go, new Catch-Up & On Demand TV) is one of the best Fibre Broadband, line rental, calls and digital TV packages currently on the market.

Sky Broadband and TV customers can also add more of what they love to their subscription by adding the likes of Sky Sports, BT Sport, Sky Cinema and Sky Kids, all available on 30-day contracts if required.

And finally don't forget that Sky's truly unlimited Broadband Superfast package with Sky phone line rental is now just £27 a month for new customers buying without Sky TV and existing Sky customers re-contracting. Please click here to order online at www.sky.com/broadband.
