1. Introduction

TalkTalk (TalkTalk Telecom Group plc) entered the market back in 2003 as a challenger brand to BT and has grown to become the UK's fourth largest broadband, home phone and TV supplier with approximately 4.3 million customers. TalkTalk is known for its low prices and is rightly regarded as the UK's leading value for money telecoms provider, especially with its cheap triple play broadband, phone and TV deals. However, the company also remains known for its poor customer service, but is this still the case? Take a look through our review below to find out how TalkTalk Broadband really fares and whether they're any good. You'll then be in a position to decide whether a TalkTalk Broadband deal (or a TV, phone & broadband bundle) is right for you. Then, when you're ready, you can start your order from this page.

2. Key TalkTalk Highlights

  • Average speeds: Fast Broadband ADSL 11Mbps, Fibre 35 Broadband 38Mbps, Fibre 65 Broadband 67Mbps, Fibre 150 Broadband 147Mbps (limited availability), Fibre 500 Broadband 506Mbps (limited availability)
  • TalkTalk Full Fibre review: TalkTalk's Full Fibre broadband packages, now referred to as TalkTalk Future Fibre packages, are called Fibre 150 and Fibre 500. TalkTalk Future Fibre utilises the expanding Openreach Fibre-To-The-Premise (FTTP) network that currently covers 4.7 million UK homes and is forecast to reach 25 million UK homes by 2026. TalkTalk Future Fibre is also available in Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Bolton, Cambridge, Coventry, Doncaster, Leeds, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Peterborough & Stirling using CityFibre's network. TalkTalk Fibre 150 is priced from £29.95 a month. Use the TalkTalk Future Fibre checker for your area here
  • Latest TalkTalk Deals: FREE UK calls with Fibre 65 and Fibre 150 packages, 12 months FREE Prime Video with TalkTalk TV, no setup fees (P&P) on all fibre packages, £22p/m for Fibre 35, £25p/m for Fibre 65, £29.95p/m for Fibre 150, £40p/m for Fibre 500, £26p/m for Fibre 35 & TalkTalk TV, £29p/m for Fibre 65 & TalkTalk TV, £33.95p/m for Fibre 150 & TalkTalk TV. FREE Supersafe Boost (powered by award-winning security experts F-Secure) with Fibre 150 (otherwise an extra £2p/m)
  • Standard features included: Totally unlimited plans, security, privacy & parental controls - Homesafe & Callsafe, plus 30-day Great Connection Guarantee with all fibre packages
  • Latest customer broadband complaints data Q4 2020: 19 broadband complaints per 100,000 customers versus an industry average of 16 per 100,000 - performing better than rivals Virgin Media, Plusnet & Vodafone (Source: Latest Ofcom Telecoms & Pay TV Complaints Report, published 30th April 2021)
  • Latest Customer satisfaction data 2020: 77% satisfaction with the overrall TalkTalk Broadband service, up from 72% back in 2018, but still a little below the 2020 industry average of 80% (Source: Ofcom Comparing Customer Service Report 2020, published 7th May 2021)

3. TalkTalk Broadband Speed Performance

The TalkTalk broadband download speeds of 11Mbps for Fast Broadband, 38Mbps for Fibre 35 and 67Mbps for Fibre 65 are average download speeds that are available to at least 50% of their customer base at peak time (8pm to 10pm). TalkTalk uses the Openreach network (part of the BT Group) for its ADSL and fibre broadband. As such, its speeds are in line with the average speeds of other major broadband providers like BT, Plusnet, Sky and EE - all of which also use the Openreach network. Note, the exception of Virgin Media, which uses its own network and offers much faster speeds (at a more expensive price).

Looking at the The Ofcom annual UK Home Broadband Performance Report 2019 (measurement period November 2019, published in May 2020), TalkTalk's advertisied speeds for its ADSL and fibre broadband are slighly lower than their actual real world speeds. The Fast Broadband (11Mbps) package had an average peak-time download speed of between 7Mbps and 9.6Mbps, the Fibre 35 (38Mbps) package was 31.2Mbps-35.6Mbps and the Fibre 65 (67Mbps) package was 58.8-63.2Mbps. TalkTalk's Ultrafast Future Fibre 150 & 500 packages are only available in limited geographical areas (around 10% of UK properties). As such, no Ofcom speed research data is currently available.

Please note that the TalkTalk speeds you experience will vary depending on a number of different factors. You will be able to check the estimated broadband speed to your property prior to purchasing TalkTalk online.

6. TalkTalk Home Phone Review

All TalkTalk Broadband deals include home phone line rental. Pay as you go calls to UK landlines and mobiles can then be used and you will be charged for each call in accordance with TalkTalk's latest tariff.

If you're a regular home phone user, you can add a cheap TalkTalk home phone calling plan (known as a Boost) to your broadband subscription. For example, the Unlimited UK Calls Boost covers unlimited anytime calls to UK landlines & mobiles and costs £7.50 a month. Other options include calling plans to international numbers and overseas mobiles (known as the International Max Calls Boost). TalkTalk home phone calling plans (Boosts) are competitively priced and are available on a flexible 30-day contract which means they can be added or removed fairly easily.

7. TalkTalk TV Review

TalkTalk TV may not be as comprehensive as Sky or Virgin Media, but when combined with TalkTalk broadband and phone, it makes a good choice for bargain hunters looking for a great value triple play bundle.

Prices start from £26 a month for average fibre download speeds of 35Mbps, around 80 Freeview TV channels and the basic YouView box which allows you to pause and rewind live TV. 7-day catch-up TV and all the best on-demand players are available. Bundles of premum TV channels, known as TV Boosts, can be added, changed and removed on flexible 30-day contracts. These popular Boosts contain the likes of Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Kids TV and Entertainment TV (contains 33 of the UK's top pay TV channels like Sky One, Fox & GOLD). To complete the bundle, phone line rental is included, together with pay as you go calls to UK landlines and mobiles.

TalkTalk TV is currently just an extra £4 a month with the TalkTalk Fibre 35, Fibre 65 & Fibre 150 broadband packages. 12 months FREE Prime Video is also available. See the table below for more information.

10. Installation & Setup

Upon ordering TalkTalk Broadband online, you'll receive an order confirmation email from them and a proposed date for the activation of your broadband. In the subsequent days, you'll also receive a Welcome Pack in the post with all the details and instructions you need.

Your activation date will depend on whether TalkTalk can use your existing phone line or whether a new phone line needs to be installed. This will be determined during your online sign-up process.

If TalkTalk can use your existing phone line (because it's an Openreach line used by the likes of BT, Sky & Plusnet), then your activation date will be around 13 days after you place your order. This is slightly longer than the industry average of 11 days according to Ofcom's Comparing Service Quality Report (last published August 2020).

If you need a new phone line to be installed, your activation date will depend on the date you have chosen for your engineer visit. This date can be checked in your Welcome Pack or in the My Account section of the TalkTalk website. A one-off £50 charge applies for the installation of a new phone line.

Either way, a few days before your activation date, you should receive your TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub router in the post. On the activation day, you'll receive a text message and/or an email from TalkTalk once your switch is complete and your broadband service is ready. Simply plug the TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub into your master phone socket and follow the setup instructions to get going.

With regards to the switching process, if your existing broadband supplier is BT, Plusnet, EE or Sky, you will not need to contact them as TalkTalk will liaise with them on your behalf and cancel your contract. Remember though, you will need to contact Sky directly if you have a Sky TV package that you wish to cancel.

If your existing supplier is Virgin Media, you will need to cancel your services directly with them. Please make sure you choose a cancellation date that is close to your TalkTalk activation date.

11. TalkTalk Broadband Customer Service Performance, Satisfaction, Support, Complaints & Phone Numbers

The TalkTalk Customer Service team is available from 8am to 8pm and can be contacted for free by phoning 0345 172 0088. This number can also be used for TalkTalk Technical Support which is available 24 hours a day, every day. If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, the Text Relay Service can be used to help you contact TalkTalk. Please dial 18001 followed by 0345 1720 088. According to Ofcom, the average call waiting time for TalkTalk in 2020 was 1 minute 46 seconds, far quicker than the industry average of 4 minutes, 9 seconds.

The TalkTalk Customer and Technical Support team are also available via Live Chat 7 days a week between the hours of 8am and 10pm. You can also use the TalkTalk app to message the team, or alternatively, you can write to them at TalkTalk. The TalkTalk address is as follows: TalkTalk Correspondence, PO Box 675, Salford, M5 0NL.

The TalkTalk website has an active online community where you can find thousands of helpful articles. If you're unable to find an answer or solution to your question or problem, you can post your question to the community. Alternatively, take a look at the Service Centre on the TalkTalk website where you'll find a range of new online repair tools.

Although the above is all positive, Ofcom's latest customer complaints data (Q4 2020) shows TalkTalk with 19 broadband complaints per 100,000 customers, compared to an industry average of 16 per 100,000. They are not the worst though, with Vodafone, Plusnet and Virgin Media having the highest complaints.

Finally, in Ofcom's Comparing Customer Service report 2020, the overall customer satisfaction with the TalkTalk Broadband service was found to 77%, lower than the industry average of 80%, but considerably better than their 2018 score of 72%.

12. Our Final Verdict On TalkTalk Broadband

TalkTalk Broadband Review - Our Final Comment And Rating
Final Rating - 3.5 out of 5
If you're looking for a cheap, no thrills, fairly priced broadband package or a good value triple play bundle of TV, phone & broadband, then TalkTalk is worth considering. You won't have access to the ultra speeds of Virgin Media or the extensive TV channels offered by Sky, but you will enjoy lower prices and greater clarity on how much you will pay during the life of the contract.

Unfortuately, TalkTalk does suffer from a poor customer service reputation and the Ofcom reports are not overly flattering, so this remains a concern. That said, it has made improvements and is no longer the most complained about broadband supplier, so perhaps this is a sign of better things to come.
