TalkTalk Broadband Review 2024 - Is TalkTalk Worth Switching To?

Review article by , last updated

TalkTalk WiFi Hub Router

What We Like (Pros): Fair prices for all broadband speeds, full fibre plans include Amazon's award-winning eero 6 series Mesh router containing the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, Total Home Wi-Fi available for better Wi-Fi coverage around your home, short call waiting time when I tested contacting them (1 minute, 40 seconds)

What We Dislike (Cons): Customer complaint levels are consistently above the industry average, customer satisfaction levels are lower than the industry average, no one-month rolling broadband contracts

Our Verdict: 3.5 out of 5 3.5 Star Rating

1. Introduction

TalkTalk (TalkTalk Telecom Group plc) entered the market back in 2003 as a challenger brand to BT and has grown to become the UK's fourth largest broadband, home phone and TV supplier with approximately 4.3 million customers. TalkTalk is regarded as one of the UK's leading value for money telecoms providers, especially with its broadband, phone and TV deals. However, the company also remains known for its poor customer service. We've taken a closer look at TalkTalk Broadband and uncovered what their speeds and customer service is really like. We'll tell you what we like and dislike about TalkTalk and compare them against Sky and BT. You'll then be in a position to decide whether a TalkTalk Broadband deal is right for you. Then, if you're ready, you can start your order from this page.

2. TalkTalk Broadband - At a glance

  • Average speeds: Fast Broadband ADSL 11Mbps, Fibre 35 Broadband 38Mbps, Fibre 65 Broadband 67Mbps, Ultrafast Fibre 150 Broadband 147Mbps (limited availability), Ultrafast Fibre 250 Broadband 250Mbps (limited availability), Full Fibre 150 152Mbps (limited availability), Full Fibre 500 525Mbps (limited availability), Full Fibre 900 944Mbps (limited availability)
  • TalkTalk Full Fibre review: TalkTalk's Full Fibre broadband packages, previously referred to as TalkTalk Future Fibre packages, are called Full Fibre 150, Full Fibre 500 and Full Fibre 900. TalkTalk Full Fibre utilises the expanding Openreach Fibre-To-The-Premise (FTTP) network that currently covers just over 12.8 million UK homes and is forecast to reach 25 million UK homes by 2026. TalkTalk Full Fibre is also available areas like Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Bolton, Cambridge, Coventry, Derby, Doncaster, Leeds, Leicester, Milton Keynes, Peterborough & Stirling using CityFibre's network. TalkTalk Full Fibre 150 is priced from £28 a month and includes the award-winning Amazon eero 6 series mesh router which I found to be particularly stylish & minimalistic. • Standard features included: Totally unlimited plans, security, privacy & parental controls - Homesafe & Callsafe, plus 30-day Great Connection Guarantee with all fibre packages
  • Total Home Wi-Fi, featuring an additional Amazon eero router for ultimate Wi-Fi coverage around your home, is available with all TalkTalk's Full Fibre packages for an extra £6 a month
  • Six months FREE TalkTalk Broadband for eligible job seekers: Please see information on the TalkTalk Social Tariff for more details
  • TalkTalk Broadband customer complaints data Q3 2023: 15 broadband complaints per 100,000 customers, versus an industry average of 15 per 100,000 - performing worse than many of its rivals, but better than NOW and Virgin Media (Source: Latest Ofcom Telecoms & Pay TV Complaints Report, published 25th January 2024)
  • TalkTalk Broadband customer satisfaction data 2022: 78% satisfaction with the overrall TalkTalk Broadband service, but still a little below the 2022 industry average of 82% (Source: Ofcom Comparing Customer Service Report 2022, published 18th May 2023)

3. TalkTalk Broadband Speed Performance

The TalkTalk broadband download speeds of 11Mbps for Fast Broadband, 38Mbps for Fibre 35 and 67Mbps for Fibre 65 are average download speeds that are available to at least 50% of their customer base at peak time (8pm to 10pm). TalkTalk uses the Openreach network (part of the BT Group) for its ADSL and fibre broadband (and also City Fibre for full fibre). As such, its speeds are in line with the average speeds of other major broadband providers like BT, Plusnet, Sky and EE - all of which also use the Openreach network. Note, the exception of Virgin Media, which uses its own network and offers much faster speeds (at a more expensive price).

Looking at the Ofcom UK Home Broadband Performance Chart Data (measurement period March 2023, published in September 2023), TalkTalk's advertisied speeds for its fibre broadband packages are slightly lower than their actual real world 24-hour average speeds. The Fibre 35 (38Mbps) package was 35.98Mbps with a 11.79 milliesecond (ms) latency/ping and the Fibre 65 (67Mbps) package was 62.64Mbps with a 12.52ms latency/ping. TalkTalk's Full Fibre 150Mbps package had an impressive real world average 24-hour speed of 154.91Mbps. No Ofcom speed research data is currently available for TalkTalk's Full Fibre 500 and 900 package.

Please note that the TalkTalk speeds you experience will vary depending on a number of different factors. In my tests I was able to check the estimated broadband speed to my property prior to purchasing TalkTalk Broadband online.

6. TalkTalk Home Phone Review

All TalkTalk Broadband deals (with the exception of full fibre) include home phone line rental. Pay as you go calls to UK landlines and mobiles can then be used and you will be charged for each call in accordance with TalkTalk's latest tariff.

If you're a regular home phone user, you can add a cheap TalkTalk home phone calling plan (known as a Boost) to your broadband subscription. For example, the Unlimited UK Calls Boost covers unlimited anytime calls to UK landlines & mobiles and costs £7.50 a month. Other options include calling plans to international numbers and overseas mobiles (known as the International Max Calls Boost). TalkTalk home phone calling plans (Boosts) are competitively priced and are available on a flexible 30-day contract which means they can be added or removed fairly easily - which I think is a particulary useful feature.

7. TalkTalk TV Review

TalkTalk TV may not be as comprehensive as Sky or Virgin Media, but when combined with TalkTalk broadband and phone, I think it makes a good choice for bargain hunters looking for a great value triple play bundle.

TalkTalk TV can be added anytime to any TalkTalk fibre or full fibre broadband package - with the broadband contract unaffected. It costs just £5 a month, has a minimum 30-day commitment and can be cancelled with 48 hours notice anytime after the 30 days. I really like how you're not tied into a long TV contract period.

The new TalkTalk TV Hub with 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos sound is available for those customers on or taking one of TalkTalk's full fibre packages. Offering TV entertainment without limits, the new TalkTalk TV Hub features 70+ live Freeview channels, 7 day catchup TV, pause and rewind TV, all your favourite on-demand Players like the BBC iPlayer and subscription apps like Netflix, Prime and NOW. With Google Play available, you can access over 10,000 apps, talk to Google to control your TV and put your small screen (e.g. your mobile) on the big screen (e.g. your TV) with the built-in Chromecast (I found this to be really useful and quick). A one-off fee of £25 may apply for the new TalkTalk TV Hub which will be applied to your first bill.

Those customers taking or on a TalkTalk fibre package (not full fibre) can choose the TalkTalk TV 4K box. No one-off fee is charged for this box. Powered by Netgem TV, the TalkTalk TV 4K box is a Freeview Play device. It offers similar channels, players and apps to the TalkTalk TV Hub above, but without the Google services.

Note, both the TalkTalk TV Hub and 4K box described above provide access to 4K content on various players and apps. You will need a 4K supported TV to watch any of this 4K content.

10. Installation & Setup

Upon ordering TalkTalk Broadband online, you'll receive an order confirmation email from them and a proposed date for the activation of your broadband. In the subsequent days, you'll also receive a Welcome Pack in the post with all the details and instructions you need.

Your activation date will depend on whether TalkTalk can use your existing phone line or whether a new phone line needs to be installed. This will be determined during your online sign-up process.

If TalkTalk can use your existing phone line (because it's an Openreach line used by the likes of BT, Sky & Plusnet), then your activation date will be around 15 days after you place your order. This is slightly longer than the industry average of 14 days according to Ofcom's Comparing Service Quality Report (last published May 2023).

If you need a new phone line to be installed, your activation date will depend on the date you have chosen for your engineer visit. This date can be checked in your Welcome Pack or in the My Account section of the TalkTalk website. A one-off £50 charge applies for the installation of a new phone line.

Either way, a few days before your activation date, you should receive your TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub router in the post. On the activation day, you'll receive a text message and/or an email from TalkTalk once your switch is complete and your broadband service is ready. Simply plug the TalkTalk Wi-Fi Hub into your master phone socket and follow the setup instructions to get going.

With regards to the switching process, if your existing broadband supplier is BT, Plusnet, EE or Sky, you will not need to contact them as TalkTalk will liaise with them on your behalf and cancel your contract. Remember though, you will need to contact Sky directly if you have a Sky TV package that you wish to cancel.

If your existing supplier is Virgin Media, you will need to cancel your services directly with them. Please make sure you choose a cancellation date that is close to your TalkTalk activation date.

Finally, if you're a TalkTalk customer who's about to move house, check out our TalkTalk moving home article.

11. TalkTalk Broadband Customer Service Performance, Satisfaction, Support, Complaints & Phone Numbers

The TalkTalk Customer Service team is available from 8am to 8pm and can be contacted for free by phoning 0345 172 0088. This number can also be used for TalkTalk Technical Support which is available 24 hours a day, every day. If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech-impaired, the Text Relay Service can be used to help you contact TalkTalk. Please dial 18001 followed by 0345 1720 088. According to Ofcom, the average call waiting time for TalkTalk in 2022 was 1 minute 22 seconds, far quicker than the industry average of 2 minutes, 37 seconds. When I tested this myself, I was waiting for 1 minute and 40 seconds, which I was impressed with.

The TalkTalk Customer and Technical Support team are also available via Live Chat 7 days a week between the hours of 8am and 10pm. You can also use the TalkTalk app to message the team, or alternatively, you can write to them at TalkTalk. The TalkTalk address is as follows: TalkTalk Correspondence, PO Box 675, Salford, M5 0NL.

The TalkTalk website has an active online community where I found thousands of helpful articles. If you're unable to find an answer or solution to your question or problem, you can post your question to the community. Alternatively, take a look at the Service Centre on the TalkTalk website where you'll find a range of new online repair tools.

Although the above is all positive, Ofcom's latest customer complaints data (Q3 2023) shows TalkTalk with 15 broadband complaints per 100,000 customers, the same as the industry average. This is an improvement on previous quarters, so I'll be keeping a close eye on whether this continues or not.

Finally, in Ofcom's Comparing Customer Service Report 2022, the overall customer satisfaction with the TalkTalk Broadband service was found to 78%, lower than the industry average of 82%

13. Our Final Verdict On TalkTalk Broadband

TalkTalk Broadband Review - Our Final Comment And Rating
Final Rating - 3.5 out of 5
If you're looking for a fairly priced broadband package or a good value triple play bundle of TV, phone & broadband, then TalkTalk is worth considering. You may not have access to the ultra fast speeds of Virgin Media straight away or the extensive TV channels offered by Sky, but you will enjoy in most instances, lower prices.

Unfortuately, TalkTalk does suffer from a poor customer service reputation and the Ofcom reports are not overly flattering, so this remains a concern. That said, it has made investments in this area, so perhaps this is a sign of better things to come.
