Orange May Buy Project Kangaroo Broadband TV
Mobile communications provider Orange has confirmed it is examining the possibility of buying the broadband TV technology developed by Project Kangaroo.
Project Kangaroo is the Broadband TV joint venture between ITV, the BBC and Channel 4 that has been stopped by the Competition Commission, despite over £20 million pounds of investment.
With the assets of the company now being sold to recover some of the investment, Orange is one of two companies in talks to buy the technology behind it.
A spokesman for Orange said, “We are examining this company and we see of course that it could be interesting. Nothing has been decided but we can confirm we are examining it.”
Should Orange end up buying the Project Kangaroo technology, it is thought that the company will use it to expand its broadband TV service throughout Europe. In particular, they are planning to use it in France where there are currently more than one million subscribers to its Orange TV service.
A France Telecom spokesman said: “On Orange TV we are very cautious about what we are saying in the UK, but it could help us in developing more quickly Orange TV projects in France.”
Orange had been looking to launch Orange TV within the UK, however due to the current economic downturn, its plans were put on hold.
A trial consumer group was reportedly ready to test the new service in the UK but they have now been advised that the project has been temporarily cancelled.
BT Launches I-Plate To Increase Broadband Speeds
BT has today launched the BT I-Plate filter to help increase customers broadband speeds.
Available at the BT online shop for just £11.74, the BT I-Plate is a unique filter that helps stop any interference affecting the broadband signal.
Commenting on the launch, a spokesman for BT said, “We think that the I-Plate can certainly play a part in delivering higher broadband speeds to people suffering poor performance.”
Problems with broadband connection speeds are often caused by interference to the broadband signal by other household appliances such as microwaves and telephones. The BT I-Plate stops all this interference and in tests has proved to increase speeds by 1.5Mbps and even up to 4Mbps.
The I-Plate is now on sale at the BT Shop website, with the company expected to launch a large marketing campaign in the summer to drive awareness and sales.
Statistically it is thought that around 7 out of 10 homes will be able to use the new I-Plate from BT.
T-Mobile Offers Non Expiry Pay As You Go Broadband
T-Mobile look to set to offer a non expiry pay as you go broadband service known as pay per use mobile broadband later this year.
Just like pay as you go texting and calling, non expiry pay per use mobile broadband enables users to literally pay for what they use at any time – and without a monthly expiry date to use the data allowance by.
Richard Warmsley, the Head of Mobile Internet and Entertainment at T-Mobile, said, “This year we will shift into pay-per day/week/month options for new customers. This will give the mass market a chance to try mobile broadband. They can purchase their dongle and pay for usage as and when they need it. 1-2Mbps is typical on our network, 2-3Mbps is achievable, and you can get 4.5Mb in bigger cities, depending on the circumstances.”
Vodafone is currently the only mobile broadband supplier offering non expiry pay per use mobile broadband with its Top Up & Go service. Users simply pay a one off £39 for the Vodafone USB stick which comes pre-loaded with 1Gb of data. Top ups can then be purchased at £15 per 1Gb with no time restriction on when the 1Gb data allowance needs to be used by.
As well as looking into different types of pay as you go mobile broadband packages, T-Mobile is also looking at different data bundles that could be introduced with charges based on minutes rather than usage being considered.
