Virgin Media Top Broadband Speed Test Results
Virgin Media (virginmedia.com/broadband) has topped the latest broadband speed tests conducted in March and thus retained its position as the UK’s fastest broadband supplier.
Its next generation fibre optic broadband network generated average broadband download speeds of 8.192Mbps in March, with second placed O2 Broadband and BE Broadband recording 5.355Mbps.
Sky secured third position with speeds of 3.829Mbps, while TalkTalk and BT had average download speeds of 3.535Mbps and 3.258Mbps respectively.
In the upload speed test results, O2 and BE Broadband retained top spot with average upload speeds of 0.703Mbps. Virgin Media held second position with upload speeds of 0.550Mbps, while Sky came in third with 0.490Mbps.
Virgin Media’s fibre optic broadband service is available to 55% of UK homes and offers maximum speeds of up to 50Mbps dependant on location. No BT phone line is required.
Its size L, up to 10Mbps broadband service, is currently available for free for the first 3 months, followed by £12.50 a month after.
Free weekend calls to UK landlines are included, together with a free wireless router, PC security and customer support.

Virgin Media Says It’s Time For Better Broadband
Virgin Media (virginmedia.com/better) is claiming it is time for better broadband in a recent advertisement for its fibre optic broadband service.
In a clear swipe at one of its main competitors, the advertisement leads with the headline ‘Broadband Trickery. Commonly referred to as BT’.
The advert, in yesterday’s press, continues with copy stating that BT’s claim to deliver ‘consistently faster’ broadband including up to 20Mbps did not ring true as independent speed tests showed BT customers received on average less than 3Mbps speeds.
In comparison, Virgin Media customers experienced on average over twice the broadband download speeds of BT.
The independent speed tests figures were taken from broadband.co.uk’s UK broadband speed test results from November 2009 to January 2010.

Last month the ISP announced plans to commence the roll out of a 100Mbps fibre optic broadband service by the end of 2010. It was claimed that such a service would offer broadband speeds 24 times faster than the average speeds provided by rival providers.

Virgin Media’s New V HD Box Offers HD For Free
Virgin Media (virginmedia.com/hd) TV customers will soon be able to watch HD channels for free with Virgin’s new V HD box.
Available from the 22nd March, the new V HD Box will enable new and existing Virgin TV cutomers to watch their favourite TV channels in stunning high definition – And with no additional monthly subscription fee like Sky’s HD pack which costs £10 a month.
Customers will simply need to pay a one-off cost of £49 for the V HD box and £35 for installation, though there will be a self-install option available for £15 from the 1st of April.
Virgin Media’s current HD channels includes those from the BBC and Channel 4 that are available to all Virgin TV customers, plus an extensive range of on demand TV & film HD content including recent blockbusters like the Inglourious Basterds, Star Trek and The Hurt Locker.
New customers ordering Virgin Media’s ‘XL’ TV package can also get National Grographic HD, MTV HD, LIVING HD and ESPN HD which includes Premier League football in high definition.
New HD channels from Film4, E4, SCI FI, Discovery, ITV and Eurosport are being added to Virgin’s TV service soon following a series of announcements from the provider in recent weeks.
The new V HD box is a set top box only, so users wanting to record their favourite TV shows in HD will need to upgrade to the V+ HD box that, like the new V HD box, costs a one-off £49, plus £5 a month on top of their Virgin TV subscription fee.
Unlike Sky, Virgin Media retain ownership of its set-top boxes. This means customers do not have to face expensive call-out charges or replacement or repair fees should anything go wrong with their box.
Virgin Media are currently offering 2 months free on all its TV packages. Prices then start from £5.50 a month for access to 65 digital TV channels and Catch Up TV with the BBC iPlayer, ITV Net Player and 4oD. There’s also a huge choice of films, shows and music videos that are available on demand.

Virgin Media’s Big Offer Gives 2 Months Free
Virgin Media (virginmedia.com/bigoffer) has launched its biggest offer yet, giving customers switching to its Essentials Bundle 2 months free, plus free installation.
The Virgin Media Essentials bundle is an all in one TV, broadband and phone calls package that normally costs £18 a month.
The Virgin TV service includes over 65 digital TV channels with massive shows like House Season 6 showing on Sky 1 and Cougar Town on LIVING.
There’s also access to the BBC iPlayer, ITV Net Player and 4oD right there on your telly, plus a huge library of on-demand films containing all the latest releases.
Sky Movies, Sky Sports and ESPN can also be added individually to the Essential Bundle for an additional fee.
The Virgin broadband service provides up to 10Mbps broadband speeds with an unlimited download usage allowance.
A wireless router is included for wireless broadband access around the home while subscribers will also receive a free security package for their PC worth £50.

Free installation, worth an additional £35, is also included with the Essentials bundle. This will involve a Virgin Media engineer visiting a users property and installing the TV, broadband and phone services for free.

Virgin Broadband To Get 100Mbps Speeds
Virgin Media (virginmedia.com/broadband) has announced plans to commence the roll out of 100Mbps fibre optic broadband speeds by the end of 2010.
The new 100Mbps service will be Virgin’s flagship broadband product amongst its existing 10Mb, 20Mb and 50Mb packages and offers speeds 24 times faster than the average speeds provided by rival providers.
Such lightening speeds mean tasks like downloading a music album will take only 5 seconds, while an hour long TV show will take just 31 seconds.
Virgin Media has a unique fibre optic cable broadband network that already delivers up to 50Mb broadband speeds to just over half of all UK homes.
According to the company, its broadband network is reportedly able to deliver very close to its advertised headline broadband speeds, which is unlike many of its ADSL competitors, or that of new fibre optic services – A clear dig at BT Broadband’s new fibre to the cabinet Infinity service!
Commenting on the news, Neil Berkett, Virgin Media’s CEO, said: “There is nothing we can’t do with our fibre optic cable network, and the upcoming launch of our flagship 100Mb service will give our customers the ultimate broadband experience”.
Berkett continued: “Just as we led the way by launching the UK’s first ever next generation service, we want to keep giving our customers the very best broadband available, by investing in technological innovation and transforming the experience they have when they are online. News of the 100Mbps roll out, the extension of its 200Mbps trial to Coventry and record net customer additions for Q4 2009 led to Virgin Media shares jumping 7%.

Virgin Broadband Tops Broadband Speed Test
Virgin Broadband (virginmedia.com/broadband) has retained its position as the UK’s fastest broadband provider following the publication of January’s broadband speed test results.
Virgin’s fibre optic cable broadband service generated average broadband download speeds of 7.651Mbps in January, that’s almost 50% higher than second placed O2 Broadband / BE Broadband with 5.113Mbps.
In third spot was TalkTalk with speeds of 3.628Mbps, while BT had average download speeds of 2.982Mbps.
In the upload speed test results, O2 and BE Broadband came out top with average upload speeds of 0.716Mbps, with Virgin coming in second with upload speeds of 0.588Mbps. Third was TalkTalk with 0.487Mbps.
