Vodafone UK Doubles Mobile Broadband Speeds
Vodafone UK (vodafone.co.uk) has announced that it has doubled its mobile broadband speeds to a maxmium of up to 14.4Mbps and commenced roll out in key UK locations.
14.4Mbps is the fastest speed that first generation HSDPA technology supports which makes the operator the first in the UK to achieve this.
In practice though, most users will not experience the top 14Mbps mobile broadband speeds as this will depend upon a users distance from the upgraded base station and how in demand the base station is by other users at the same time.
Vodafone predict that users connected to an upgraded base station will get speeds between 1Mbps and 5Mbps, with up to 10.8Mbps possible.
The Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone UK, Jeni Mundy said: “Sites with the greatest demand will be upgraded first with the 14.4Mbps capability. Busy areas of London, Birmingham and Liverpool have already received upgraded sites and the roll out will continue across the UK on an ongoing basis”.
Mundy continued: “Today’s network upgrade means customers can be reassured we’re consistently enhancing the quality of our network in response to demand”.
It is estimated by Vodafone that 80% of PCMCIA data cards, 3G handsets and USB modems should be compatible with the new speeds.

Growth In Broadband Connections Surprises Many
New figures recently released have shown significant growth in UK broadband connections despite the recession.
The level of growth has surprised many industry officials and confirms that the recession has not hit the broadband sector quite as hard as other sectors such as the car industry.
It has been widely reported how during the recession Brits have opted to cut back on food bills and entertainment rather than their broadband connection. Therefore the new figures are not a complete shock, however, the level of new broadband connections has still been surprising.
The research by Point Topic found there had been around 445,000 new broadband connections in the UK in the first half of this year. Officials had originally predicted that there would be 100,000 fewer connections than this.
Predictions have now been made for the future with 23 million broadband connections expected in the UK by 2013. However, as encouraging as this is, it is still thought that there will be around 6.5 million homes that do not have a broadband connection by 2014.
This is in contrast with the government’s Digital Britain proposals which aim to provide all UK homes with at least 2Mbps broadband speeds by 2012.
T-Mobile No.1 In YouGov Mobile Broadband Survey
T-Mobile UK (t-mobile.co.uk) has been rated the UK’s number one mobile broadband service for the third time in a row in a recent YouGov mobile broadband survey.
Conducted in July 2009, the survey obtained feedback from 2,068 mobile broadband users in the UK and found T-Mobile topping eight out of fifteen customer satisfaction metrics compared to other providers.
T-Mobile’s mobile broadband service was number one for offering the best value for money for data usage, ease of use and installation, billing and customer service. It was also the fastest for upload and download speeds.
T-Mobile UK’s Head of Post-Pay Marketing, Steve Mitchell said: “Our sustained success in what is probably the UK’s most comprehensive and regular sampling of mobile broadband customer satisfaction, shows that customers rate us highly for value for money and levels of service. Customers have the added assurance that we remain the only network to offer unlimited browsing without charging run-on rates”.
T-Mobile broadband packages offer download speeds up to 4.5Mb with prices starting from just £10 a month.
