Vodafone UK Doubles Mobile Broadband Speeds
Vodafone UK (vodafone.co.uk) has announced that it has doubled its mobile broadband speeds to a maxmium of up to 14.4Mbps and commenced roll out in key UK locations.
14.4Mbps is the fastest speed that first generation HSDPA technology supports which makes the operator the first in the UK to achieve this.
In practice though, most users will not experience the top 14Mbps mobile broadband speeds as this will depend upon a users distance from the upgraded base station and how in demand the base station is by other users at the same time.
Vodafone predict that users connected to an upgraded base station will get speeds between 1Mbps and 5Mbps, with up to 10.8Mbps possible.
The Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone UK, Jeni Mundy said: “Sites with the greatest demand will be upgraded first with the 14.4Mbps capability. Busy areas of London, Birmingham and Liverpool have already received upgraded sites and the roll out will continue across the UK on an ongoing basis”.
Mundy continued: “Today’s network upgrade means customers can be reassured we’re consistently enhancing the quality of our network in response to demand”.
It is estimated by Vodafone that 80% of PCMCIA data cards, 3G handsets and USB modems should be compatible with the new speeds.
