TalkTalk Consider Broadband Controls For Parents

TalkTalk (talktalk.co.uk) is considering introducing parental controls for a home’s broadband connection to help stop illegal file sharing online.
This would involve parents choosing from a cinema style classification list so that their home’s broadband connection could not be used to log on to file sharing or adult websites.
Charles Dunstone, the Chief Executive of the Carphone Warehouse which owns TalkTalk, said, “We are working on introducing parental controls within our network, so your household can decide whether you want to be a U, 14, or 18 certificate or unclassified”.
Customers choosing to have their settings as either 14 or U, would block access to illegal file sharing websites and adult sites.
The proposed system would be network based which means customers would not need to install any additional software onto their computer.
Mr. Dunstone continued, “This is something that we are going to do anyway, as a service to our customers. But through doing it we can also help the content industry by blacklisting sites that have BiTorrent files on them”.
Following its acquisition of Tiscali UK, TalkTalk is the UK’s largest residential broadband provider with more than 4.25 million customers.
TalkTalk’s Essentials package at £6.49 a month is the UK’s leading value for money broadband and phone package. It is currently available with the first 3 months free.
The package can be ordered online at the TalkTalk.co.uk website or by calling TalkTalk on 0800 049 7865.

IT Managers Value UK’s Broadband Speed Plans

A recent research project carried out by the British Computer Society has revealed that two thirds of IT managers value the upcoming speed developments in the UK’s broadband sector.
Claiming that it will help businesses if broadband services were better, the IT sector is definitely on board with the Digital Britain report which was published by the government back in April.
However, while advancements in broadband speeds and nationwide roll out are welcomed, it is said that more training regarding the use of the internet would also be beneficial.
The Chief Executive Officer of the British Computer Society, David Clarke, said, “Our ability to process, share and manage information will determine the success of our society. To be successful we need a high performing IT education system and a population with the IT skills to be productive, empowered citizens”.
Mr Clarke certainly has a point. It is all well and good introducing better broadband services, but if consumers and the workforce are unsure as how to make the most of them then the advancements could be wasted.
Virgin Media announced plans earlier this year to introduce new retail drop in centres where consumers would be able to learn more about the Internet and common technical issues.

BT To Double Next Generation Broadband Coverage

BT (www.BT.com) has announced plans to double its next generation copper broadband coverage by Spring 2011, making speeds up to 24Mbps available to 75% of UK homes and businesses.
The company’s current copper broadband network covers 99% of UK homes & businesses and offers speeds up to 8Mbps.
The roll out of its next generation copper broadband network, which involves putting ADSL 2+ technology into each exchange, will boost speeds to up to 24Mbps whilst also increasing speeds on very slow lines.
BT also revealed that it was reducing the wholesale broadband prices it charges providers like the Post Office and Vodafone in order to encourage the take up of its next generation copper broadband.
Commenting on the news, Cameron Rejali, Managing Director, Products, BT Wholesale said, “Today’s announcement is further evidence of BT’s commitment to deliver next generation broadband services across the UK. By expanding the footprint and reducing wholesale prices, we are helping communications providers deliver faster speeds to more customers, essential benefits in the tough economic and competitive environment we face today”.
Rejali also continued by saying, “We plan to reduce WBC prices to communications providers from January 2010 with bandwidth charges being dropped by almost 50 per cent and WBC rental costs standardised at the lowest current price, too”.
News of the roll out of BT’s next generation copper broadband network complements BT’s super-fast fibre optic based broadband strategy which aims to offer speeds up to 40Mbps to 40% of UK households by 2012.
