Orange Revamps With FREE 20Mb Home Broadband

Orange (orange.co.uk) has launched a FREE 20Mb home broadband offer as part of an exciting revamp of its home broadband packages and price plans.
The download speeds of its four home broadband packages (including the new Ultra package) have been boosted from 8Mbps to up to 20Mbps, while download usage limits have been scrapped – though a fair usage policy applies.
Existing Orange mobile customers and those new customers opting for a home broadband and Orange pay montly mobile bundle are being offered the cheapest broadband prices with Orange Max now free for the first 3 months.
The Orange Max package provides unlimited download speeds up to 20Mpbs together with a free wireless router, plus evening and weekend phone calls to UK landlines. The price reverts to just £6.50 a month after the first 3 months.
Non Orange mobile customers can also benefit with broadband packages starting from just £7 a month for speeds up to 20Mbps.
The Director of Broadband and Home for Orange UK, Asif Aziz said: “We’re really pleased to be making download speeds of up to 20 Meg available as standard – regardless of the home broadband package a customer chooses”.

Aziz continues: “With these faster speeds, built around price plans which really do offer value for money, customers can make the most of the internet and enjoy a faster and more seamless experience when going online”.
Orange’s move to offer broadband speeds up to 20Mbps brings it in line with similar speed offerings from the likes of BT, BE, O2 and Virgin Media.
The speed boost and new price plans will be supported by a major multi-channel advertising campaign using the strap line ‘No More Speeding Fines’.

Fast Broadband A LEGAL Right For ALL Brits?

BroadbandInternetUK.com, a former BBC Radio 2 Website Of The Day, has called for fast broadband speeds to be a LEGAL right for ALL people in the UK.
The call, written in a new article by co-editor Steve Tattersall, comes following last week’s announcement that Finland’s government had passed a new broadband for ALL law.
Finland’s new law, the first of its kind in the world, entitles everyone in its country to a minimum 1Mbps broadband connection speed by July 2010 – with speeds up to 100Mbps planned for 2015.
The move means Finnish broadband suppliers are in effect, being forced to install high speed broadband services across the country, including the rural and remote areas.
While details of how the law will be implemented and how the roll out will be funded are at this time unknown to Broadband Internet UK, the intent of the Finnish government is clear.
In the article, Steve Tattersall voices his concern over the broadband speed ‘targets’ in the government’s Digital Britain report.

He also goes on to state that Brits living in rural areas should have the basic right to fast fixed line broadband (in addition to satellite or mobile broadband options) and calls upon Stephen Timms, the Digital Minister for further action.
The full article can be found here, while readers are also encouraged to provide feedback below on whether they think they should have a legal right to a minimum broadband speed in their home.

The opinions and comments will be sent using this site to the Digital Minister.

TalkTalk Add Free Broadband Connection Offer

TalkTalk (talktalk.co.uk) has launched a free broadband connection offer to replace its recent 3 months free phone and broadband promotion.
The free broadband connection incentive saves new customers £29.99 which is higher than the 3 months free offer which generated savings of £19.47.
Customers switching to TalkTalk can expect to pay just £6.49 a month for up to 8Mbps broadband speeds together with unlimited evening & weekend phone calls to UK landlines.
Local daytime calls to UK landlines are also included together with anytime calls to other TalkTalk customers.
TalkTalk’s next generation broadband network now covers 85% of the country. As it is their own broadband network, many customers switching to TalkTalk will not need a MAC code from their existing broadband supplier – which makes the whole switching process far simpler.
The free broadband connection offer is available online only. Further details can found at the TalkTalk.co.uk website or our TalkTalk Broadband package review.

BT To Double 100Mb Fibre Optic Broadband Coverage

BT (www.BT.com) BT has announced plans to more than double its 100Mbps ‘fibre to the premise’ (FTTP) broadband coverage by 2012.
The company will roll out next generation fibre optic broadband (FTTP) speeds of up to 100Mbps to 2.5 million homes in the UK, that’s up from the 1 million premises it originally targeted.
The new fibre to the premises plans fit within BT’s overall target of reaching 10 million UK homes with fibre optic broadband by 2012.
Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband services with initial speeds up to 40Mbps will be provided to those homes not connected using FTTP.
Steve Robertson, CEO of Openreach, the part of BT responsible for deploying the technology said, “This development shows that we are determined to bring world-leading broadband speeds to UK homes and businesses. Service providers have asked us for more FTTP and so we have listened to them”.
Robertson continued, “The UK already leads the world when it comes to broadband availability and today’s announcement will help the UK climb the speed league tables as well. The UK is well placed but we need to invest for the future so that customers can access the rich applications that will be popular in a few years time”.

TalkTalk Add 77,000 New Broadband Subscribers

TalkTalk, (talktalk.co.uk) part of the Carphone Warehouse group, added 77,000 net new broadband subscribers to its service in the quarter to the end of September 2009.
The performance smashed City estimates of 41,000 and boosted TalkTalk’s broadband customer numbers to 4.1 million, which includes 1.3 million customers from the recently acquired Tiscali UK business.
Despite the strong performance, the company lost 62,000 Tiscali UK customers during the acquisition process. This is thought to be due to the uncertainty some Tiscali customers had over its future.
However, with the Carphone Warehouse focusing more upon customer retention, the churn rate of Tiscali UK broadband customers has improved considerably.
TalkTalk’s boost in subscriber numbers comes following the success of its Essentials package, which offers up to 8Mbps broadband speeds together with evening & weekend phone calls.
The package is free for the first 3 months, followed by just £6.49 a month thereafter.

Readers interesting in switching to TalkTalk and taking advantage of the 3 months free offer can find out more at the TalkTalk.co.uk website.

They can also call TalkTalk on 0800 049 7865.
