BT To Double 100Mb Fibre Optic Broadband Coverage

BT (www.BT.com) BT has announced plans to more than double its 100Mbps ‘fibre to the premise’ (FTTP) broadband coverage by 2012.
The company will roll out next generation fibre optic broadband (FTTP) speeds of up to 100Mbps to 2.5 million homes in the UK, that’s up from the 1 million premises it originally targeted.
The new fibre to the premises plans fit within BT’s overall target of reaching 10 million UK homes with fibre optic broadband by 2012.
Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) broadband services with initial speeds up to 40Mbps will be provided to those homes not connected using FTTP.
Steve Robertson, CEO of Openreach, the part of BT responsible for deploying the technology said, “This development shows that we are determined to bring world-leading broadband speeds to UK homes and businesses. Service providers have asked us for more FTTP and so we have listened to them”.
Robertson continued, “The UK already leads the world when it comes to broadband availability and today’s announcement will help the UK climb the speed league tables as well. The UK is well placed but we need to invest for the future so that customers can access the rich applications that will be popular in a few years time”.
