Brits Select Broadband As Top Innovation Of Last Decade

Broadband has been chosen by Britons as the number one innovation of the last decade, with reality TV and Facebook being selected the top innovation hates.
The research, conducted by innovation and growth consultancy, The Foundation, found that half of the surveyed 2,243 Brits gave Broadband the top ranking, with Online Shopping, Google, Chip & Pin and Digital Photography making up the top five.

Reality TV and Facebook headed up the top five most loathed innovations of the last 10 years, followed by Pop-up Advertising, Twitter and IVR/Interactive Voice Response on Telephones.
Commenting on the findings, Charlie Dawson, Partner at The Foundation, said: “This survey shows what good and bad innovation looks like to customers. Home broadband was the winner, perhaps surprising if you thought innovation was all about shiny new gadgets”.
Dawson continued: “It’s a reminder of how useful broadband has become for most people in the UK. It allows us to do lots of things more quickly, more effectively and with a lot less effort”.
Dawson added: “Perhaps this explains why 71% of UK households have broadband despite it being an extra cost that no one had to pay before it existed”.

Virgin Media Fibre Optic Broadband Speeds In Demand

Demand for Virgin Media (www.virginmedia.com/broadband) fibre optic broadband speeds of 20Mbps or higher has increased by 40% in the last year according to the company’s full year trading results for 2010.
Britons appetite for super-fast broadband speeds led to Virgin Media reaching 4.3 million fibre optic broadband customers by the end of 2010, 20% of which subscribe to broadband speeds of 20Mbps or higher.
In Q4 2010, 32% of new customers ordered 20Mbps or higher broadband speeds at sign up, which was twice that of the same period in 2009.
Over 118,000 customers now use Virgin Media’s 50Mbps broadband service, while the company’s 100Mbps service continues to be rolled out across its fibre optic broadband network covering 55% of UK homes. It is expected to be completed in 2012.
Such demand for faster connectivity is being driven by Britons thirst for data consumption, caused by the increasing number of Wi-Fi connected devices like laptops, netbooks, iPads, tablets, smartphones and game consoles in UK homes.
New customers switching to Virgin Media can currently get their first 6 months broadband and phone subscription for half price, meaning its 50Mbps service costs from £12.50 a month.
There’s also free installation worth £40, plus a further £40 off provided the new customer orders their package online at the www.virginmedia.com/broadband website.
