Virgin Media Completes 50Mb Broadband Roll Out
Virgin Media (VirginMedia.com) will make history this month with the completion of its 50Mb next generation broadband network – which is Britain’s first.
Using the latest DOCSIS 3.0 technology, the company has tripled its network capacity and will be the first ISP to offer up to 50Mbps broadband speeds to over 12 million UK homes.
Virgin Media also announced that it will commence trials of upload speeds of up to 10Mb, which are much faster than the download speeds of most ADSL connections. The company will also be exploring the demand for higher upstream speeds from bandwidth hungry families.
The Executive Director of Broadband at Virgin Media, Jon James said, “As the first company to bring broadband to the UK ten years ago, the completion of our next-generation network marks another pioneering moment for internet access in the UK”.
James continued, “We are delighted with the performance and reliability of our 50Mb service, and with the customer feedback. Now the roll-out is days from being complete, we’re ready to take 50Mb to the next stage of development and reinforce our leading position in the broadband market.”
Virgin Media is also piloting 200Mb broadband speeds in Ashford, Kent.
Virgin 50Mb broadband currently costs from £35 a month when taken with a Virgin phone line. Further information can be found at the VirginMedia.com website or at our Virgin Broadband review.
Virgin Media 50Mb Broadband Now In Whitchurch
Virgin Media has introduced super-fast fibre optic broadband speeds of up to 50Mbps in Whitchurch.
The new 50Mbps service will enable users to download complete albums in as little as 11 seconds and high quality full length movies in just 3 minutes.
85% of Whitchurch broadband users log on to the internet every single day. 74% of Whitchurch households also have more than one computer and share their broadband connections with consoles too.
It is these households that will really notice the difference. Even in homes where there are several people using the internet at the same time, they will still receive a fast, reliable connection from Virgin Media’s 50Mbps fibre optic broadband service.
The Executive Director of Broadband at Virgin Media, Jon James, said, “Our 50Mb service will transform the online experience for individuals and families alike”.
James continued, “The new 50Mb service in Whitchurch will allow family members to experience ultra fast broadband at the same time – regardless of how many laptops or consoles they own, and to enjoy the ultimate online TV, music and film experience”.
The Virgin Media 50Mb broadband package costs £35 per month when taken with Virgin Media phone line rental.

Virgin Media’s New Anti-Piracy Plan Welcomed
Virgin Media’s new anti-piracy plan that will be launched in conjunction with its new unlimited music download service in Q4 this year has been welcomed by the UK recording industry.
Offering DRM free MP3 downloads and streaming music, the music download service already has the Universal Music Group signed up and it is expected other major record lables will soon follow.
Virgin Media’s anti-piracy plan will involve a real crack down on illegal file sharers who use its broadband network. Warning letters will be sent out to persistent offenders, but if that doesn’t work, a temporary suspension will be placed upon the user. This means that they will not be able to access the Internet for a set time period.
The Virgin Media music download service will have two options for users. The first option will allow a certain number of downloads per month.
The second more expensive option will offer unlimited downloads where the user can basically download as many songs as they like for a set monthly fee. This fee hasn’t yet been announced by Virgin Media but it is thought to be the equivalent to the price of two albums.
Despite receiving support from the UK recording industry, the download service has come under criticism by Madeleine Milne, the eMusic Managing Director for Europe, who said, “If it’s truly unlimited, how will they pay the publishers? An unlimited model would be similar to the one eMusic had in 2000, which was unworkable from a revenue standpoint.”
