TalkTalk Broadband To Increase Coverage To 90%

TalkTalk (talktalk.co.uk/switch) has revealed plans to boost its UK broadband coverage to nearly 90% of the UK population by the end of the year.
The UK’s biggest broadband and phone provider currently covers around 80% of the UK population having unbundled 1,700 telephone exchanges.
The process of unbundling a telephone exchange is known as Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) and involves a provider like TalkTalk installing its own kit in a telephone exchange so that its customers can use its next generation broadband network as opposed to BT’s existing network.

TalkTalk plans to unbundle a further 300 exchanges over the coming year resulting in over 2,000 enabled exchanges and near on 90% coverage of the UK population.

Commenting on the news, TalkTalk’s Communications Director, Mark Schmid, said: “We’re also upgrading the capacity of our network in anticipation of ever-higher internet usage. The industry expectation is that consumption of data online will increase by a whopping 50% year on year over the next few years. We’re enhancing our network to cope with this explosive rise in demand”.
Schmid continued: “This upward trend is being boosted by the rise of online TV and video services like BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and, of course, YouTube. Soon these will be joined by Canvas, the online TV service we are a part of, which will provide an iPlayer-style catch-up service on your TV set, while also giving you additional content and features”.
TalkTalk currently offer one of the UK’s cheapest home phone and broadband packages on the market with its Essentials plan costing just £6.99 per month.
Providing broadband download speeds up to 24Mbps and unlimited evening & weekend phone calls to UK landlines, TalkTalk Essentials is a popular choice for new customers switching broadband supplier.
