BT (www.BT.com<\/a>) has announced that from today it is offering millions of its customers a free broadband speed upgrade to up to 20Mbps \u2013 together with a free BT Broadband Accelerator speed pack.<\/p>\n

The faster broadband speeds will initially be available to 10 million UK homes and businesses via 549 enabled exchanges. This represents 40% of UK homes, while a further 15% will be covered by March 2010.<\/p>\n

Unlike other broadband suppliers, BT is offering the faster broadband speeds for free. The means new and re-contracting customers can get up to 20Mb BT Broadband for just \u00a37.78 a month when they order online at BT.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The BT Broadband Accelerator speed pack includes a small plate that customers can easily insert into their main telephone socket to reduce electrical interference. This is reported to help increase broadband speeds by up to 1.5Mb.<\/p>\n

Along with installation instructions, the speed pack also includes a 10-step guide on how to optimise home broadband speeds.<\/p>\n

Worth \u00a315, the BT Broadband Accelerator pack can be ordered online for free at BT.com<\/a>, with postage costing just \u00a31.20.<\/p>\n

The Managing Director of BT\u2019s Consumer division, John Petter, said: \u201cThe BT Broadband Accelerator can make a big difference to the speed of your broadband. We think it is so important we\u2019ve taken the decision to offer it to our customers for just the cost of the postage\u201d.<\/p>\n

Petter continued: \u201cBetween that and us more than doubling headline speeds for millions of homes and businesses, most customers should start to see a rapid boost in the performance of their connection. We have a track record of not charging customers any more when we increase the speed and this time is no different. BT broadband customers won\u2019t have to pay any more to get higher speeds\u201d.<\/p>\n

Petter concluded: \u201cThese two moves demonstrate our commitment to helping the UK move closer to the kind of widely-available speeds published in the Digital Britain report\u201d.<\/p>\n
